P.S. 107’s first Harvest Day was a great success! There may have been some holdouts, but it seems fair to say that every stduents sampled at least one dish made with produce grown in the Sunshine Garden!
And not only that, they learned about the fascinating history of apples and sang veggie songs; 5th Graders read their applications to become student reps on the school cafeteria's monthly partnership meetings; students saw a slide show on the Sunshine Garden, tasted apple varieties, and sampled Kale Slaw, Eggplant Caponata, and Rice with Herbs, the latter of which was selected by the students as the best and will now be added to the cafeteria's lunch menu. After all the yummy tasting, the students enjoyed lunch outside, featuring chicken with herbs and pasta pesto, both made with herbs from the garden.
Harvest Day was the culminating project of the Garden to School Café program, sponsored by the NY State Dept. of Agriculture and Markets and the DOE SchoolFood. P.S. 107 was selected last year as a participating site in this special initiative. Thanks to PS 107 computer teacher Dorthy Hall and PS 107 parent Susan Fox for their contribution of photos.
