Harvest Day 2010

P.S. 107’s second annual Harvest Day, an event that is part of a special DOE SchoolFood and NY State Department of Agriculture and Markets program called Garden to School Café, was a rousing success. Foodplay, a live theater production focused on nutrition and health education, started the day. Students then made their way to the cafeteria to first play some fun food-related games and sing some original songs about healthy food.

Then, they passed through the ever popular food expo. There, students sampled an array of fresh vegetables and homemade dips, finely toasted pumpkin seeds, freshly squeezed juice, and apples from Vermont and New York. But the best part was the tasting of three specially prepared dishes — babaghanoush, potato salad without mayonnaise, and a roasted winter squash medley. The winner? The quite appetizing babaghanoush, which was closely followed by the potato salad.

Lunch, eaten in the big yard, contained herbs that came from the school’s very own Sunshine Garden. And that lunch was fantastic: herbed chicken and rice, fresh green beans, and a super tasty salad bar that included pasta pesto (the basil came from our garden) and a yummy chick pea salad. Blurred student faces due to DOE regulations.

Thank you to PS 107 parent and Garden Committee Co-Chair Michle Israel for the photos below. Kudos to Garden Committee Chair Michele Israel and Wellness Committee Chair Randi Roberts for thier tireless effort and hadrwork.

See a huge thank you to the people who made Harvest Day a great success, filled with fun & healthy food - we couldn't have done it without you!

Also, the FoodPlay Productions assembly was great fun and the students thoroughly enjoyed learning about nutrition in a lively and interactive way. Here are some materials, including tips for making fruits & veggies fun for kids, for you to take advantage of at home.
